Blue Ocean Mussels mussel facts and cooking tips

  1. Live mussels are packed with their beards (byssus threads). Mussels use the beard to attach themselves to rocks on the seashore. Remove the beard after cooking, by pinching the shells closed and pulling the beard out.
  2. Mussels in the half shell are very versatile and can be added to soups and sauces, baked or barbequed. For best results defrost before use. Half shell mussels are pre-cooked and should be heated through prior to consumption. To avoid overcooking, always add mussels as the final ingredient to your recipe.

  3. The orange fleshed mussels are female and the white fleshed mussels are male. There is little difference in their flavour and texture.
